Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Kyoto largely depends on your preferences for weather, budget, events and crowd levels. Also, it depends on your personal preferences and what you want to experience during your trip. Here's a breakdown of the different seasons:

Spring (March–May): Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Kyoto, with cherry blossoms in full bloom at Maruyama Park and along the Philosopher’s Path. The weather is mild, and hanami (flower-viewing) season attracts large crowds, especially in early April. Prices rise significantly during peak bloom, making it one of the most expensive times to visit.

Summer (June–August): Kyoto’s summer is hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C (95°F). The Gion Matsuri Festival in July is a major attraction, bringing excitement but also large crowds. This is one of the least crowded times outside of festivals, and hotel prices are more affordable.

Fall (September–November): Fall brings stunning autumn foliage, particularly in Arashiyama and Tofukuji Temple. The weather is cool and comfortable, making it one of the best seasons for sightseeing. Kyoto sees high tourist numbers in November, and prices increase, though not as much as during cherry blossom season.

Winter (December–February): Kyoto’s winter is cold, with occasional snowfall creating picturesque views at Kinkaku-ji and other temples. The city is peaceful, except during the New Year’s holiday, when temples and shrines become busy. This is the least crowded and cheapest time to visit outside of holiday weeks.
